So now we enter day two, which is about tearing walls down. You know what that means, right? You’ve got it! Pneumatic drills, heavy tools, epic breaking, and lots of noise. Which makes it a shame that none of us at Sound Disposition are qualified to do such work, so we got in two builders, and we just got the pleasure of watching (or listening).

The builders prepare to tear down the wall

Perhaps this time should be taken to tell you that there was nothing dangerous or risky about this maneuver whatsoever. If, of course, you ignore the amount of dust it created in the atmosphere, not only in the studio, but also outside it. Below you will see just how much that bothered the builders and people of Sound Disposition:

He really demonstrates just how much this wall is bothering him

Marc hard at work in observing the dust flow in his direction

Roland posing in front of the nearly complete wall

As you can see from above, the mission to create the brand new doorway to what will be the new main mix room was a success. Here a couple of highlights to the day:

If you were trapped in a building with no walls and Marc came to rescue you, this is what it would look like

Hope there's enough space left in the skip...

There is no photo evidence of this, but the builders came across a wall with a lot of glass. The sound we could hear from the main office would suggest that perhaps that wall is no longer there…

And so it begins, the process that will make the studios two redundant rooms, finally, a little less redundant. Over a year ago, we at Sound Disposition hired two extra rooms as they were previously being used by very noisy people, so we put them on a lease to put a stop to it. Throughout that time, we have been making plans to extend the studio, but have been unable to execute such plans due to film projects. In our spare moments, we have been enjoying the pleasure of tearing the heck out of those badly built rooms. This has left us with one thing. Rubble. Lots and lots of rubble.

Marc's horrified reaction as he gazes upon this task

So now we have the time to rebuild the studio, we begin by getting a skip.

And so it begins...

About an hour later – the skip is full. So, whilst having to order another skip, there are other tasks underway:

Me, removing nails from wood, because I've been banned from dusty environments

Our builder/electrician Dan, re-wiring to prevent us from breaking through electricity

Jake dancing to drum and bass music that isn't even playing

Marc getting into a fight with the wallpaper

These are to prepare for day 2, which is breaking down the wall ready for a doorway between two of the studio rooms. So, the skip gets taken away, and a new one arrives, and not too long later:

But it's okay, we only have to get an entire wall in there next...

And so the day ends with a mostly cleared out room of rubble, and a wall truly ready to be torn down. We will leave you with a couple of highlights for the day:

Myself (Jamie), in case you couldn't tell through my magnificent disguise

Jake taking his meditation time...

Hot off the press – news that Ashvin Kumar’s feature ‘The Forest’ is to finally get a cinema release on Friday April 13th 2012. It’s being released by PVR across India.

Some backstory – we shot this film back in 2004. I recorded the location sound, with Heather Andrews and Rohit Jain helping me out. It was a 3 month shoot, which began in Jim Corbett national park in Uttranchal in the autumn of 2004. The shoot involved myriad complexities, not least the fact that it featured two extremely grumpy (and customs-unfriendly) adult leopards.

The shoot continued in Thailand, and we then did the sound editorial work first in Dehli, then completing the foley and mixing in Mumbai. The re-recording mixer was Kath Pollard, and Rael Jones did much of the editorial work. Ruth Sullivan did the foley, and the mix was ably assisted by the wonderful Sreejesh Nair.

That was all 7 years ago, and this film has been languishing on a shelf for all that time. Until now. It’s fabulous news that this great film is finally getting seen, and I hope it gets the reception it deserves in India, perhaps even leading to a proper international release.

We are all extremely excited by the news that LIPSTIKKA, the phenomenal feature by director Jonathan Sagall, is going to be in competition at the Berlinale! This is the first time one of our films has competed there, and is the perfect end to what has been an exceptional year for Sound Disposition. We had our suspicions that the film would do well – from the first viewing it stood out as a great and challenging piece of cinema.

The film – a UK/Israeli co-production – has been the subject of a great deal of controversy, most of it undeserved and unrelated to the film itself! You can read about this here:

Marc and Roland plan on going to Berlin to support the film during the festival.

We had the pleasure being a part of a historic project this year – the first ever feature film to be shot and produced in the country of Qatar. The director is Khalifa Almuraikhi.

The story of the film revolves around the ancient music of Fidjeri, a form of folk-music supposedly so beautiful that it was handed down from the spirit world to the human realm. It spans decades, following the fortunes of the musician Atique and his adopted son Saad.

I was brought on board to supervise the post sound and music. The composer was Maciek Dobrowolski, and on a very tight schedule he managed to create a phenomenal score. You can hear extracts of it here, and see some photos from the recording sessions in Poland here.

The sound design and editorial was carried out in London at Sound Disposition, and I then travelled to Thailand for the final mix, which was carried out at Technicolor in Bangkok.

We are expecting a release in the gulf soon, and hopefully a wider release will follow.

You can read some more about the project here:

Marc has recently returned from Lausanne, Switzerland, where he spent a long and tiring week recording sound for a corporate documentary about the World Wildlife Fund’s drive to promote its Climate Savers scheme to big businesses around the world.

From their website:

“Leading corporations are partnering with WWF to establish ambitious targets to voluntarily reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. By 2010, the Climate Savers companies will collectively cut carbon emissions by some 14 million tons annually – the equivalent of taking more than 3 million cars off the road every year. By increasing efficiency, Climate Savers companies are saving hundreds of millions of dollars, proving again that protecting the environment makes good business sense.”

This is one of many projects that Sound Disposition has been involved in with Deliverers. We have also collaborated on films for Adidas, Microsoft, Dell, Johnson & Johnson, Astrazeneca, and many more besides.
